Hey my name is Buddy Tim and you’re watching the Disney channel

So it’s finally time to take a break and relax, or at least I thought. So we were told to talk about what we are going to do over the break, in regards of our project that is. For myself, I will be finishing a project I started yesterday which is a piece of wood with three trees with swirled branches. Along with that I am going to have to do research and come up with an idea for my final project as I need to incorporate 2 different styles of carving into it. For this I need to find something that needs both knives and chisels/gouges.

As well I need to sharpen my blades as they are beginning to dull and chip. To do this I am going to have to set-up a station I can use oil around and sharpen them. I am going to have to re-watch some videos on sharpening as I do not want to mess up and damage my blades.

Along with the school work I am going to do, I have some other plans for the break as well. First is, of course, going to family holiday dinners. And second is going snowboarding at Spring Hill and at my friends house where we have been building a trick hill and are planning on building a tow rope system to be able to quickly go up and down the hill. Reaching maximum practice capacity.

I forgot my title at home

Holi Moli Pass the Ravioli

So this week has been a big week in the sense that we have gotten the update that we do not have lots of time remaining. They showed us what the next few weeks are going to look like with getting ready for our final presentations and finishing our projects.

This week for me has been trying to figure out what my next product should be. I have a few ideas in mind but have been trying figure out the best route to take. I am going to have to glue some pieces of wood with whichever idea I go with and have been trying to figure out the risks of doing so, as carving against glue can cause damage to my chisels and knives.

Both ideas are decently complicated in the techniques, where with one I would have to hollow out some of the background around the design (a tree), or the other one being a tiki statue that would require intense detail/focus to get the look of a real tiki statue.

Floor Hockey

This week floor hockey intramurals began and it was interesting. My team had two games, one on Tuesday, which I was not there for but we won 7-1, and another on Thursday. The game we had on Thursday, which was my first, was against the teachers. On the teacher team was both our teachers, except Mr H. was not there, the two gym teachers and two other teachers who I do not know. The game started off a bit rough and by half the score was 1-3. Five minutes in we had score 2 goals, but they  had scored 2 as well. The next ten minutes was the most frustrating sport event I have ever taken part in, in a school gym. Mr. Patrician the “pro” floor hockey player pumped himself up. I do not know what this man did, either he gave himself a shot of adrenaline or drank about five red-bulls but this man was on fire. (Cue Alicia Keys-This Girl Is On Fire remix) He went in and scored 5 goals, one after another. We tried stepping up our game but there was no chance. From Mr. P’s  shots to Mr. Days passing and handles there was close to no chance of us coming back. The game ended with a score of 3-9 and my hopes and dreams of becoming a professional floor hockey that never were will never be. Although we had a rough game, we are still hopeful as a team that we will try as hard as we can paying our next few games so that we will not have to deal with that feeling again. Hopefully by the  end of the season this is the only loss we have and my dreams of becoming a professional will be restored.

I cut through

So over the past couple weeks I’ve been trying to get my project started and I’ve finally got the ball rolling. Last weekend I went and got my supplies to begin practicing carving. So far this week I have been watching videos and practicing some techniques. Along with my supplies I bought a pair of “cut-proof” gloves that I cut through on the second day of practicing. I have began carving on a single piece about three inches long and have just been making some practice cuts on it, just trying to get a feel for the tool, and get myself comfortable with it. So far it has gone quite well, and I feel myself getting better and really starting to understand the movements and some of the techniques.

After I finished starting my blog for this week I went back to practicing carving. As I was practicing I decided to use a different piece of wood than I  had been using.  It was a different type of wood than I have been using lately, Basswood, and I decided to begin rounding off the edges. I want to point out that I was being a little over confident with myself and I chose to begin without my gloves, as I did this I slipped off the piece of wood and into my fingers.

Note to self, always wear your gloves.

New Ideas

So since my last entry I have changed my project. I spent the last week debating what idea to go with. I began with three main ideas, the first being designing and building a skateboard and starting a business with that. My second was to begin designing and printing posters and begin a business within that. My  third idea and the idea I went with is to learn how to chip carve wood. I am going to build a wooden chest with designs on every side and on top. The designs will be the Celtic symbols of the four main elements and on top will be the Celtic symbol for spirit. I have re-written my technical proposal and have gotten my budget approved. That has given me the chance to now go this weekend to get my supplies and begin next week.

Stresses

So far this week I have gotten all of my measurements for my desk and I began sketching up how it will look and the measurements and dimensions for each piece. I had gone to home depot to try and figure out what type of wood I am going to use,  but when I got to school today I asked Mr. P what he thought of my choices and he pointed me towards something completely different. With this new information I am going to have to redo a lot more math to figure out how many boards I will need as my initial math was for 4 foot by 8 foot sheets and the wood Mr. P directed me towards comes in 5 feet by 5 feet sheets. I am starting to get concerned I am going to exceed the budget, but I will not know until I redo my math, which is my next step to hopefully finally finishing my technical proposal.

Trip to the Forks

Yesterday we went to the Forks to do a photojournalism project. Our goal was to be able to create a sway presentation and tell a story of the forks with only photos. I ended up spending most of my time walking by the river. But instead of walking on the walk path like a regular human being I decided to take the path of the squirrel and walk through the trees. My plan was to hopefully find something in the side of the “hill” leading down to the river walkway. I ended up finding a bunch of stones/rocks protruding out of the ground. Instantly my mind started thinking of what these could be from and why they were where there. My first thought was well they could just be the “outer core”  and were just there because of natural reasons, the most likely reason, but the way the were placed told me for some reason that it could be of other reasons. My other thought was that maybe it was part of an old railway system that had gotten demolished when the Forks became a touristic site. Something that furthered this thought was the fact that I had found a part of an old railway track. To conclude I never found out why these were there on the side of the hill by the river, but I hope one day to go ask around and maybe get some answers.

Projects

This week we began talking about our projects and how to get started on them. We began to write our technical proposal letters, which would include what our project is, what we need to accomplish our goals, etc. So far this week has really got me thinking about my project and all the details and steps I need to acount for.

For my project I am making a multiple use table, including an easel, a couple lights, ports/hooks for wires, cabinets as legs, etc. My next step is measuring the diameters of the space I would like it to fit. After that, is deciding what type of wood to use. I hope to go to some lumber yards soon to check out my options. Once I get the go from Mr. P and Mr. H I will purchase my wood and begin the building process.

As this table needs to get into my basement, it will wall be separate parts. There will be two cabinet/drawers as the base/legs of the table. The top of the table which should be around 6′ by 2.5′. There will also be a section of the table acting as a overhang, which will include two cupboards with sliding doors. And lastly there will be the supports of the overhang and back wall.

I aim to finish the proposal by the end of the week and hope to start my project soon as I am excited to get things started.

About to start

It’s the third week and we’re almost done the classroom building activities. They finally started painting yesterday and are finishing today. The bio PowerPoint is almost done and most of the other tasks have been completed. With tomorrow the deadline we really need to hurry up, only problem being the wifis out today.

With the news of starting out projects next week I am beginning to more excited. I also an getting kind of nervous because I still need to decide what type of wood I will be using and I need to finish planning/sketching.

I can’t wait to start working on my project and hopefully we will start very soon.
